An electrician runs a cable from your electrical panel to the charger's mounting location. The cable terminates directly inside the charger, no plug, no outlet. NEC 2020 code note: The 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC 625.44) requires that EV chargers in one- and two-family dwellings be supplied by a dedicated branch circuit with no other outlets. This applies to both hardwired and plug-in installations. Some jurisdictions have not yet adopted NEC 2020, so requirements vary by location. Your electrician should know your local code version.

An electrician installs a 240V outlet, usually a NEMA 14-50 (the same type used for electric ranges and dryers), near your parking spot. You then plug the charger into the outlet yourself. No electrician needed for the charger itself. If you move, you unplug the charger and take it with you.

The Case for Hardwired

Cleaner look. No visible outlet or plug. The charger sits flush against the wall with only the charging cable visible. For garages that double as workshops or showrooms, the clean installation matters.

No outlet to fail. The most common point of failure in plug-in installations is the outlet itself. Plug connections can loosen over time from thermal cycling (heating when charging, cooling when idle). Loose connections cause overheating, melted outlets, and potential fire hazards. A hardwired connection eliminates this failure point entirely.

Higher amperage options. Most plug-in chargers max out at 40 amps continuous (on a 50-amp circuit with NEMA 14-50). Hardwired chargers can go to 48 amps on a 60-amp circuit or even 80 amps on a 100-amp circuit with the right equipment. If you need maximum charging speed, hardwired gives you more options.

Code compliance. In jurisdictions that have adopted NEC 2020 or later, hardwired installation on a dedicated circuit is the cleanest path to code compliance. No ambiguity about outlet ratings or connection types.

When hardwired wins clearly: You own your home and plan to stay for 5+ years. You want a clean installation. You need more than 40 amps of charging. Your local code requires or favors hardwired connections. The charger location is permanent and you will not need to move it.

The Case for Plug-In

Portability. Unplug the charger and take it with you when you move. If you rent, this is essential, you are not leaving a $500 charger behind. Even homeowners who might move in a few years benefit from the ability to take their charger to the next house.

Easy replacement. If your charger fails or you want to upgrade, you unplug the old one and plug in the new one. No electrician needed. With hardwired, replacing a charger requires an electrician to disconnect and reconnect wiring, adding $100-$200 to the cost of a swap.

Shared circuit flexibility. A NEMA 14-50 outlet can be used for other 240V equipment when the charger is not connected. Some EV owners share an outlet between their charger and a welder, compressor, or other workshop equipment (never simultaneously). With hardwired, the circuit serves only the charger.

DIY-friendly. Once the outlet is installed by an electrician, you mount and plug in the charger yourself. No electrical knowledge required. Some chargers even come with mounting brackets designed for tool-free installation.

Which Chargers Support Both?

Most modern EV chargers support both installation types. ChargePoint Home Flex, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Emporia Level 2, and JuiceBox all come with a plug but can also be hardwired by removing the plug and connecting the wires directly. Grizzl-E offers separate hardwired and plug-in models. Tesla Wall Connector is hardwired only.
