Don't Panic, Most Errors Are Fixable

You walk into the garage in the morning, expecting a full charge, and instead you see a red light, an error code in your charger's app, or worse, no lights at all. Your car didn't charge overnight, and you need to leave for work in 20 minutes.

Take a breath. The vast majority of EV charger errors are caused by simple issues: a tripped GFCI, a loose connector, a Wi-Fi hiccup, or a temporary ground fault. You can diagnose and fix most of them yourself in under 10 minutes, no electrician needed.

Universal Error Types (All Charger Brands)

Before diving into brand-specific codes, let's cover the error categories that apply to virtually every home EV charger:

Ground Fault Detected

What it means: The charger detected current leaking to ground instead of flowing through the normal circuit path. This is a safety feature, the charger shuts down to prevent shock hazard.

Common causes: Moisture in the connector or outlet (especially outdoor installations), a worn or damaged charging cable, insect nests inside the charger housing, or a genuine wiring issue in the circuit.

Fix it yourself:

  1. Unplug the connector from your car and inspect both the connector and the car's charge port for moisture, debris, or damage.
  2. If the connector is wet, dry it thoroughly. Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer directly on the pins, let it air dry or use compressed air.
  3. Reset the charger by unplugging it from the wall (for plug-in units) or switching off the circuit breaker for 30 seconds, then restoring power.
  4. Try charging again. If the ground fault recurs immediately, the issue may be in the charger itself or the home wiring, call an electrician.
Outdoor Charger Tip
If you get frequent ground fault errors on an outdoor charger, check the weatherproof cover on your outlet. A cracked or poorly sealed cover allows moisture to creep in during rain. Replacing the cover ($15-$30) often solves recurring ground fault issues permanently.

Overcurrent / Over-Temperature

What it means: The charger is drawing more current than expected, or internal components are running too hot. The charger reduces power or shuts down to protect itself.

Common causes: Ambient temperature above 104°F (40°C), common in un-insulated garages during summer, restricted airflow around the charger (don't stack boxes against it), or a failing internal relay or contactor.

Fix it yourself:

  1. Check the charger's temperature. If it's hot to the touch and it's a warm day, let it cool down for 30 minutes and try again.
  2. Ensure the charger has at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation.
  3. If the error persists in moderate temperatures with good airflow, the issue is likely internal, contact the manufacturer for warranty service.

Communication Error (Car Won't Start Charging)

What it means: The charger and your car can't establish a communication handshake. The charger sends a pilot signal to the car, the car responds, and then charging begins. If this handshake fails, nothing happens.

Common causes: Dirty or corroded connector pins, the car's charge port latch not engaging fully, a software glitch in the car or charger, or incompatibility between the charger's pilot signal and the car's onboard charger.

Fix it yourself:

  1. Unplug, wait 10 seconds, and replug. Press the connector firmly until you hear or feel the latch click.
  2. Check for debris in your car's charge port, leaves, ice, or dirt can prevent proper contact.
  3. Try restarting your car (turn off, wait 30 seconds, turn back on) and then plug in again.
  4. If your charger has adjustable amperage, try reducing it by one step. Some cars are picky about the initial power negotiation.

No Power / Charger Won't Turn On

What it means: The charger has no electricity reaching it.

Fix it yourself:

  1. Check your circuit breaker panel. The EV charger breaker may have tripped, flip it fully off, then back on.
  2. For plug-in chargers: ensure the plug is seated firmly in the outlet. NEMA 14-50 plugs can loosen over time due to thermal cycling (heating and cooling from load).
  3. Check for a tripped GFCI. Some installations include a GFCI breaker, these can trip independently of the main breaker.
  4. If the breaker trips again immediately upon restoring power (before you even plug in the car), there's a short circuit, call an electrician.

Brand-Specific Error Codes

Tesla Wall Connector

Tesla uses colored LED patterns on the Wall Connector's light bar:

  • Red, 1 flash: Ground fault detected. Check connector and outlet for moisture. Reset the breaker.
  • Red, 2 flashes: Ground assurance fault. The ground wire may be loose or disconnected, electrician territory.
  • Red, 3 flashes: High temperature. Let the unit cool down and check ventilation clearance.
  • Red, 4 flashes: Internet connectivity issue. Not a charging problem, the charger will still charge, it just can't phone home.
  • Red, 5 flashes: Power sharing communication error (only relevant in multi-unit setups).
  • Red, 6 flashes: Overcurrent detected. The charger is drawing more than expected. Try reducing the amperage setting in the Tesla app.

ChargePoint Home Flex

ChargePoint uses the app for detailed error messages and the unit's LED ring for status:

  • Solid red ring: Fault detected. Open the ChargePoint app for the specific error message (ground fault, overcurrent, communication error, etc.).
  • Blinking yellow: Waiting for scheduled charge time. This isn't an error, the charger is waiting for your programmed start time.
  • No light: No power to the unit. Check breaker and outlet.

JuiceBox

JuiceBox displays status through its front panel LED and the Enel X app:

  • Red LED, steady: Ground fault or hardware error. Reset by cycling the breaker. If it persists, contact JuiceBox support.
  • Red LED, flashing: Overcurrent or over-temperature. Let it cool, check amperage settings in the app.
  • Yellow LED: Wi-Fi connection issue. Charging still works, this only affects remote monitoring.

Grizzl-E

Grizzl-E uses a simple LED system (no app for the classic model):

  • Red LED: Ground fault detected. Unplug, inspect, reset breaker, retry.
  • No LED: No power. Check breaker.
  • Green, not charging: Communication issue with the vehicle. Unplug, wait, replug firmly.

Wallbox Pulsar Plus

Wallbox uses a colored halo light and the myWallbox app:

  • Red, breathing: Error detected. Open the app for the specific code.
  • Red, blinking fast: Ground fault or serious electrical issue. Reset the breaker. If it continues, do not use, contact Wallbox support.
  • Yellow: Waiting for scheduled time or paused by the app. Check your schedule settings.

When to Call a Professional

Most charger errors resolve with the basics: check the connector, reset the breaker, ensure ventilation, update firmware. But some situations require a licensed electrician:

  • Breaker trips repeatedly: If the breaker trips every time you restore power (even before plugging in the car), there's likely a short circuit in the wiring.
  • Burning smell or discoloration: Any sign of heat damage at the outlet, plug, or charger connection point means stop using it immediately and call an electrician.
  • Ground fault errors that won't clear: If you've dried everything, replaced the outlet cover, and the ground fault error persists through multiple resets, the issue may be in the home wiring.
  • Loose outlet: If your NEMA 14-50 plug wiggles in the outlet or feels warm after charging, the outlet contacts may be worn. A loose connection is a fire risk, get it replaced.
Safety First
If you ever see sparks, smell burning, notice discoloration on the plug or outlet, or feel heat at the connection point, stop charging immediately. Switch off the breaker and do not use the charger until an electrician has inspected the circuit. Loose connections and overheating are the leading causes of electrical fires in home EV charging setups.

Preventive Maintenance That Prevents Errors

A few minutes of maintenance every few months dramatically reduces error frequency:

  • Monthly: Inspect the connector and charge port for debris, corrosion, or damage. Wipe with a dry cloth.
  • Quarterly: Check that the plug is seated firmly in the outlet (for plug-in chargers). Wiggle it gently, if it moves, the outlet may need replacement.
  • Twice yearly: Update charger firmware through the manufacturer's app. Firmware updates often fix bugs that cause error codes.
  • Annually: Have an electrician check the circuit connections at the panel and the outlet/junction box. Thermal cycling can loosen connections over time.
