You bought a smart EV charger specifically for the Wi-Fi features, scheduling, energy monitoring, app control, time-of-use optimization. But if the charger can't stay connected to your network, those features are useless. This is one of the most common complaints I hear from EV owners, and the good news is that most Wi-Fi problems have straightforward fixes.

Why EV Chargers Are Particularly Prone to Wi-Fi Issues

Before we troubleshoot, it helps to understand why your charger has more Wi-Fi problems than your phone or laptop.

Location: Your charger is in your garage or mounted outside, typically the farthest point from your Wi-Fi router. Walls, especially concrete garage walls, dramatically reduce signal strength. A signal that shows "full bars" in your kitchen might be barely detectable in your garage.

2.4 GHz only: Most EV chargers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. They don't connect to 5 GHz bands. If your router broadcasts a single network name that serves both bands, the charger may intermittently try to connect to 5 GHz and fail.

Metal interference: Garages are full of metal, cars, tool cabinets, shelving, the garage door itself. Metal surfaces reflect and absorb Wi-Fi signals, creating dead zones right where your charger sits.

Low processing power: Your charger's Wi-Fi radio is basic compared to a smartphone. It has less antenna gain, lower processing power for maintaining connections, and less sophisticated error handling. It needs a cleaner, stronger signal than your phone does.

Before trying anything else, stand next to your charger with your phone connected to Wi-Fi and run a speed test. If you get less than 5 Mbps down or the signal is below -70 dBm (check in your phone's Wi-Fi settings), the problem is signal strength, not the charger. Everything below focuses on solving that.

Step 1: Separate Your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Networks

This single change fixes roughly 40% of EV charger Wi-Fi problems. Modern routers often use "band steering", they broadcast one network name and automatically assign devices to 2.4 or 5 GHz. This confuses most EV chargers.

What to do: Log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser). Find the wireless settings and create separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. For example: "HomeWiFi" for 5 GHz and "HomeWiFi-2G" for 2.4 GHz. Connect your charger to the 2.4 GHz network only.

  • Eero, Google Nest WiFi, and most mesh systems: These aggressively merge bands and make it hard to separate them. You may need to temporarily create a guest network on 2.4 GHz only for your charger.
  • Netgear, TP-Link, Asus: These typically let you easily split bands in the wireless settings page.
  • ISP-provided routers (Xfinity, AT&T, etc.): Check the app or web portal, most allow band splitting, but it's sometimes buried in advanced settings.

Step 2: Improve Signal Strength in Your Garage

If your signal is weak at the charger's location, you have three options ranked from cheapest to most reliable:

Option A, Reposition your router ($0): If your router is in a back bedroom and your garage is on the opposite side of the house, even the best router will struggle. Moving the router to a central location or closer to the garage side of the house can make a dramatic difference.

Option B, Add a Wi-Fi extender ($25-$60): A basic Wi-Fi range extender plugged into an outlet near the garage (like in a hallway or mudroom between the router and garage) can bridge the gap. Set it to extend only the 2.4 GHz network. TP-Link RE315 and Netgear EX3700 are solid budget options.

Option C, Run an access point or mesh node ($80-$200): The most reliable solution is placing a dedicated Wi-Fi access point in or near the garage, connected to your router via ethernet cable. If running ethernet isn't practical, a mesh Wi-Fi node (like an extra Eero or Google Nest point) in the garage provides a strong, stable connection.

Step 3: Check Your Router Settings

Certain router configurations cause intermittent disconnections even when signal strength is fine.

Assign a static IP or DHCP reservation: Your router assigns an IP address to your charger via DHCP. Sometimes the lease expires and the charger fails to renew it cleanly. Log into your router, find your charger in the connected devices list, and create a DHCP reservation (also called a static lease). This ensures your charger always gets the same IP address.

Disable AP isolation: Some routers have "AP isolation" or "client isolation" enabled, especially on guest networks. This prevents devices on the same network from communicating with each other, which can interfere with charger discovery and control from your phone's app.

Check for MAC address filtering: If you've enabled MAC address filtering as a security measure, make sure your charger's MAC address is on the allowed list. The MAC address is usually on a label on the charger or in the charger's app/settings.

Update router firmware: Outdated router firmware causes all sorts of connectivity quirks. Check your router manufacturer's website or app for firmware updates. This is free and takes five minutes.

Brand-Specific Tips
ChargePoint Home Flex: Requires 2.4 GHz WPA2, won't connect to WPA3 or open networks. If setup keeps failing, temporarily set your 2.4 GHz network to WPA2-only.

JuiceBox: Known to drop connections with mesh routers that aggressively roam devices between nodes. Assign a DHCP reservation and, if using Eero, disable "band steering" in the Eero Labs section.

Step 4: Factory Reset and Reconnect

Before resetting: Write down any custom settings, charge schedules, amperage limits, energy budgets. These will be erased.

How to reset: Most chargers have a small reset button (usually a pinhole on the bottom or side). Hold it for 10-15 seconds until the status light changes. Then go through the initial Wi-Fi setup process in the manufacturer's app as if it were brand new.

Step 5: Consider Alternatives to Wi-Fi

If Wi-Fi is simply not reliable in your charging location, some chargers offer alternatives:

  • Cellular: Some commercial-grade chargers (ChargePoint CPF50, Enel X JuiceBox Commercial) have built-in cellular modems that don't need Wi-Fi at all. These are pricier but bulletproof for connectivity.
  • Bluetooth: For basic functions like scheduling and monitoring, several chargers work over Bluetooth when Wi-Fi isn't available. The range is limited (30 feet or so), but it works for quick adjustments.

When to Contact Support

If you've tried all of the above and your charger still won't maintain a stable connection, it's time to contact the manufacturer. Before you call, have this information ready:

  • Charger model and firmware version (visible in the app when connected via Bluetooth)
  • Router make, model, and firmware version
  • Wi-Fi signal strength at the charger's location (use a free app like WiFi Analyzer)
  • Your network setup (mesh, extender, direct router, separate 2.4 GHz SSID)
  • A description of the failure pattern (never connects, connects then drops, drops during charging, etc.)

This saves you from the first 20 minutes of scripted troubleshooting and gets you to the engineers who can actually help.
