Location Matters More Than You Think

Most people pick their charger location based on where they park. That's a reasonable starting point, but it's not the only factor. Where you mount your EV charger affects installation cost (the farther from your panel, the more wire you need), daily usability (cable reach, plugging in during rain), charger longevity (weather exposure, temperature extremes), and even your home's curb appeal.

Let's break down each option so you can make the right call for your specific situation.

Option 1: Inside the Garage (The Gold Standard)

If you have a garage and park inside it, this is almost always the best choice. Here's why:

Advantages:

  • Weather protection: Your charger is shielded from rain, snow, UV exposure, and temperature extremes. This extends the life of the unit significantly, electronics and outdoor weather aren't friends.
  • Shorter wire runs: Your electrical panel is usually in or near the garage, meaning less wire, lower installation cost, and less voltage drop.
  • Convenience: You plug in when you get home and unplug when you leave. No walking outside in bad weather.
  • Security: The charger and cable are behind a closed door. No theft concerns.
  • Cleaner look: No visible equipment on the exterior of your home.

Where to mount it: The ideal spot is the wall closest to your car's charge port, at a height of 42-48 inches from the floor to the center of the unit. Mount it on the side where you'll plug in, driver's side or passenger's side depends on your car's port location. Check your specific vehicle's charge port location before you pick a wall.

The catch: Garage mounting only works if you actually park in your garage. If your garage is a workshop, storage facility, or gym, an exterior location may be more practical.

Option 2: Exterior Wall (Side of House or Garage)

If you park in the driveway, an exterior-mounted charger is the next best option. It's more common than you might think, roughly 30% of home EV chargers are mounted outside.

Advantages:

  • Works for driveway parking: If your driveway is your parking spot, this is the most practical option.
  • No garage required: Homes without garages or with detached garages far from the panel benefit from exterior mounting on the main house.
  • Flexible placement: You can mount the charger at the point closest to where you park, minimizing cable stretch.

What you need to get right:

  • NEMA rating: Your charger must be rated for outdoor use. Look for NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X ratings, which mean the unit is sealed against rain, snow, dust, and (for 4X) corrosion. Most name-brand chargers, ChargePoint Home Flex, Grizzl-E, JuiceBox, Tesla Wall Connector, carry NEMA 4 ratings.
  • Weatherproof outlet: If you're using a plug-in charger, the NEMA 14-50 outlet must have a weatherproof, in-use cover rated for wet locations. This is the spring-loaded cover that stays closed while the plug is inserted.
  • Cable management: A cable hook or holster keeps the charging cable off the ground when not in use. Dragging a cable through puddles and dirt accelerates wear.
  • Sun exposure: If possible, mount on a north-facing or shaded wall. Direct sunlight and UV degrade plastic housings and LCD screens over time.

Option 3: Pedestal or Freestanding Mount

If no wall is close enough to where you park, a pedestal mount puts the charger exactly where you need it. This is common for circular driveways, parking pads away from the house, or detached garages where running power to the garage wall is impractical. Trenching required: Underground runs typically need a trench 18-24 inches deep with conduit protecting the wire. This means digging up part of your yard or driveway. Permitting: Freestanding installations may require additional permits beyond a standard electrical permit, depending on your jurisdiction. Bollard protection: If the pedestal is in a driveway or parking area, consider adding a bollard (a short steel post) to protect it from accidental bumps.

How Distance From the Panel Affects Cost

This is the factor most people underestimate. Every foot of wire costs money, and for a 50-amp EV charger circuit using 6-gauge copper wire, the cost adds up fast.

Rough estimates for wire run distance:

  • 0-25 feet (panel in garage, charger on same wall): $200-$500 for wire and conduit
  • 25-50 feet (panel inside house, charger in garage): $500-$1,000
  • 50-100 feet (panel on opposite side of house, exterior mount): $1,000-$2,000
  • 100+ feet (detached garage, pedestal mount): $2,000-$4,000+

Beyond 50 feet, voltage drop becomes a consideration. Your electrician may need to upsize from 6-gauge to 4-gauge wire to maintain adequate voltage at the charger, which adds more cost.

Save Money: Choose the Closest Wall
Before committing to a charger location, have your electrician trace the most direct path from your panel to each potential mounting spot. Sometimes moving the charger 10 feet to a different wall can save $500 or more by shortening the wire run or avoiding obstacles like ductwork, plumbing, or concrete.

Cable Reach: Don't Forget This

Most home EV chargers come with 20-25 feet of cable. That sounds like plenty, but measure twice. You need to account for the height of the charger on the wall, the path the cable takes to the charge port (over the car, not under it), and the distance if you occasionally park slightly off-center.

If your charge port is on the far side of the car from the charger, you could easily need 15-18 feet of cable just to reach comfortably. Add a few feet for the wall-to-ground drop and slack, and you're near the limit of a 20-foot cable.

Pro tip: Park your car in its normal spot, then use a tape measure or garden hose to simulate the cable path from the proposed charger location to the charge port. If you're within 3 feet of the cable's maximum length, either move the charger closer or look for a model with a longer cable.

The Decision Framework

Use this quick checklist to find your best placement:

  1. Do you park in the garage? Mount inside the garage. Done.
  2. Do you park in the driveway, close to the house? Mount on the exterior wall closest to where you park, on the side nearest your car's charge port.
  3. Is your parking spot far from any wall? Consider a pedestal mount, but get a quote first, the underground wire run may cost more than you expect.
  4. Do you have a detached garage? If the garage has its own electrical panel or subpanel, mount the charger there. If not, compare the cost of running power to the garage vs. mounting on the main house.

Whatever you choose, make sure your electrician visits the site before giving a final quote. Photos and descriptions only go so far, they need to see the panel, trace the wire path, and check for obstacles in person.
