How to Prepare Your Garage for an EV Charger: The Complete Checklist

You have bought an EV (or one is on order) and you need a home charger. The charger itself costs $400-$700. The installation costs $400-$1,200 depending on your garage's electrical situation. The difference between a $400 install and a $1,200 install is usually preparation, both yours and your home's. Here is everything you need to know and do before the electrician shows up.
Step 1: Check Your Electrical Panel
This is the single most important factor in installation cost. Open your electrical panel (the gray metal box, usually in your garage, basement, or utility room) and look at two things.
Panel capacity. Your panel has a main breaker at the top rated in amps, typically 100A, 150A, or 200A for residential homes. A Level 2 EV charger needs a 40-60 amp dedicated breaker. If your panel is already near capacity (most breaker slots are full and the main breaker trips occasionally), you may need a panel upgrade or a load management device before adding a charger circuit.
Available breaker slots. You need two adjacent slots for a 240V double-pole breaker. Open your panel door and count the empty slots. If there are no empty adjacent slots, an electrician can sometimes use tandem breakers to free up space, but this depends on your panel model.
Step 2: Choose the Charger Location
Where will you park? The charger should be within cable reach of your EV's charge port. Most chargers have 18-25 feet of cable. Walk to your parking spot and figure out which wall puts the charger closest to where the charge port will be. Check which side of the car the charge port is on, it varies by manufacturer.
Distance from the panel. Every foot of wire from your panel to the charger costs money. A charger mounted on the wall directly behind your panel might need 15 feet of wire. A charger on the opposite side of a three-car garage might need 60 feet. At $3-$6 per foot for 6-gauge wire plus conduit, the distance adds $50-$300 to installation cost.
Mounting surface. Chargers mount on drywall (with appropriate anchors or backing), concrete/block walls (with masonry anchors), or wood studs (preferred, screws into studs). If your garage has unfinished walls with exposed studs, installation is easier.
Height. Mount the charger at a height where you can comfortably reach the connector and see any display. Most installations put the connector holster at 42-48 inches from the floor. Too low and you are bending over. Too high and you are reaching up with a heavy cable.
Step 3: Understand the Permit Situation
Most jurisdictions require an electrical permit for installing a 240V EV charger circuit. This is not optional, and skipping the permit can create problems when you sell your home (unpermitted electrical work must be disclosed or remediated).
Who pulls the permit? Your electrician handles this in most cases. The cost is $50-$150 for the permit itself plus the electrician's time to file paperwork and schedule inspection.
What gets inspected? An inspector verifies the wire gauge, breaker size, circuit routing, grounding, and code compliance. The inspection typically takes 15-30 minutes and happens after installation is complete.
Timeline impact: In busy jurisdictions, permit approval can take 1-3 weeks. Inspection scheduling adds another few days to a week. Plan for 2-4 weeks from permit application to final approval. Some electricians will install the charger before the inspection (you can use it) and schedule the inspection after.
Step 4: Get Multiple Quotes
EV charger installation prices vary dramatically between electricians. Get at least three quotes. Here is what each quote should include and what to watch for.
The quote should itemize: Wire and conduit materials, breaker, outlet (if plug-in), labor hours, permit fees, and any panel modifications. A lump-sum quote without itemization makes it impossible to compare.
Red flags: An electrician who does not ask about your panel capacity before quoting. A quote that is dramatically lower than others (they may not be including the permit). Anyone who suggests skipping the permit to save money.
Reasonable range: For a straightforward installation (panel in the garage, charger within 20 feet, panel has capacity), expect $400-$700 total. For complex installations (panel in the basement, long wire run, panel upgrade needed), expect $800-$2,000+.
Step 5: Day-of Installation Checklist
On installation day, have these things ready. The charger, unboxed with mounting hardware laid out. The garage cleared, both cars out, work area accessible, panel accessible. Your preferred mounting location marked on the wall (use painter's tape). A decision on hardwired vs plug-in if your charger supports both. WiFi password written down if the charger needs WiFi setup.
Installation typically takes 2-4 hours for a standard setup. A complex installation (long wire run, panel modifications, outdoor routing) can take a full day. Ask your electrician for a time estimate when they quote the job.
Step 6: After Installation
Once the charger is installed, test it before the electrician leaves. Plug in your EV (or use a test device) and verify the charger starts, communicates with the car, and delivers power. Set up the WiFi connection and app while the electrician is still there, if there are electrical issues affecting connectivity, they can troubleshoot immediately.
Set your charging schedule, configure any time-of-use rate settings, and run one full charging session to establish a baseline. Note the kWh delivered and compare it to your car's display to verify the charger's meter is reasonably accurate.
