EV Charging and Home Insurance: What Your Policy Covers (and Doesn't)

You've installed a Level 2 EV charger in your garage. You feel great about it, convenient charging, lower fuel costs, smaller carbon footprint. But have you told your insurance company? Most EV owners haven't, and that's a gap worth closing.
Does Standard Homeowner's Insurance Cover Your EV Charger?
The short answer: usually yes, but with caveats. A permanently installed EV charger (hardwired or plug-in) is generally considered part of your home's electrical system, similar to a water heater or HVAC unit. That means your standard homeowner's policy likely covers it under "dwelling coverage" for the same perils it covers everything else, fire, lightning, windstorm, theft, vandalism, and so on.
What's typically covered:
- Damage to the charger itself from covered perils (fire, storm, theft)
- Damage to your home caused by the charger (an electrical fire originating from the charger, for example)
- Liability if someone is injured by the charger on your property (a visitor trips over the cable, or a child touches exposed wiring)
What's typically not covered:
- Mechanical or electrical failure of the charger itself (that's a warranty claim, not an insurance claim)
- Damage caused by improper installation (if you hired an unlicensed electrician or did it yourself without permits, your insurer may deny the claim)
- Power surges from the grid that damage the charger (some policies exclude this; others cover it under an equipment breakdown endorsement)
- Damage to your EV's battery from a charger malfunction (this falls under your auto insurance, not homeowner's)
Your EV charger is probably covered under your existing homeowner's policy, but "probably" is not the word you want when filing a claim. Spend 10 minutes calling your insurer to confirm. It's free and could save you thousands.
Why You Should Notify Your Insurer
Most homeowner's policies don't require you to report every home improvement. But an EV charger is a significant electrical addition that changes your home's risk profile, and there are practical reasons to disclose it.
Reason 1: Replacement cost accuracy. Your dwelling coverage should reflect the replacement cost of your home, including permanent improvements. An EV charger installation (charger + electrical work) typically costs $1,500-$3,000. If your coverage limit doesn't account for this, you could be slightly underinsured.
Reason 2: Avoid claim disputes. If a fire starts in your garage and the adjuster determines it originated from or near the EV charger, the first question will be whether you disclosed the installation. If you didn't, the claim isn't automatically denied, but it creates friction. Disclosing upfront removes any ambiguity.
Reason 3: Rate impact is minimal. I've spoken with insurance agents across multiple carriers, and the consensus is that adding an EV charger rarely increases your premium. Some insurers don't adjust the rate at all. Others might add $20-$50 per year. That's a small price for certainty.
Installation Quality Matters for Claims
This is where insurance and installation intersect in ways many EV owners don't consider. If something goes wrong and you file a claim, your insurer will investigate the installation. Here's what they look for:
Permits: Was the installation permitted by your local building authority? Most jurisdictions require an electrical permit for a Level 2 charger installation. If you skipped the permit, an insurer can argue the installation was "unauthorized" and reduce or deny coverage.
Licensed electrician: Did a licensed electrician do the work? DIY electrical work or hiring an unlicensed handyman is a red flag for insurers. A licensed electrician's work is held to code standards and is covered by the electrician's own liability insurance, giving your insurer an additional recovery path if the installation was faulty.
Code compliance: Does the installation meet current NEC (National Electrical Code) requirements? Key items include proper wire gauge for the circuit amperage, correct breaker sizing, GFCI protection for outdoor installations, and a dedicated circuit (not shared with other loads).
An EV owner installed a 50-amp charger on a circuit that was already powering a workshop subpanel. The shared circuit overheated, damaged the wiring in the wall, and caused a small fire. The homeowner's insurance covered the fire damage, but the insurer subrogated against the unlicensed installer, who had no insurance. The homeowner was left fighting over who owed what. Permits and licensed electricians prevent this entire mess.
Liability Coverage: Protecting Yourself
Your homeowner's liability coverage protects you if someone is injured on your property. With an EV charger, the most common liability scenarios are:
Trip and fall: A visitor or delivery person trips over the charging cable stretched across the garage floor or driveway. This is the most common EV charger liability claim. Good cable management (wall-mounted holsters, retractable cables, cable guards) reduces this risk significantly.
Electrical contact: Someone touches a damaged connector or frayed cable. This is rare with modern chargers (which have extensive safety interlocks) but possible with aging or damaged equipment. Regular inspection is your best defense.
Child safety: A neighbor's child plays with the charging connector or cable. If the child is shocked or injured, you're liable. Consider a charger with RFID or app-based authentication that prevents unauthorized use, and store the connector in a holster out of children's reach.
Most homeowner's policies include $100,000-$300,000 in liability coverage. For general peace of mind, many insurance professionals recommend carrying at least $300,000, especially if you have assets worth protecting. An umbrella policy ($1 million or more) costs $150-$300 per year and provides additional protection.
What About Renters?
If you rent and have a portable EV charger (like a Level 1 or portable Level 2), it's covered under your renter's insurance as personal property. If it's stolen from your parking space or damaged in a covered event, you can file a claim.
If your landlord installed a permanent charger, that's covered under the landlord's property insurance, not yours. But your renter's liability coverage still protects you if someone is injured while using the charger.
Power Surges and Equipment Breakdown
A lightning strike or utility grid surge can destroy your charger's electronics instantly. Standard homeowner's policies vary on surge coverage:
Some policies cover power surges as a standard peril. Check your policy's "covered perils" section for language about "artificially generated electrical current" or "power surge."
Some policies exclude surges or limit coverage. If yours does, ask about an "equipment breakdown" endorsement. This add-on (typically $25-$75/year) covers electrical and mechanical failure of home systems, including EV chargers, from surges, short circuits, and mechanical breakdown.
Prevention is cheaper than claims: Install a whole-house surge protector at your electrical panel ($200-$500 installed). This protects your charger and every other electronic device in your home. Pair it with a point-of-use surge protector at the charger's circuit if you want belt-and-suspenders protection. Ask if your current coverage is adequate and whether your premium changes. Keep records of the installation: permit number, electrician's license number, invoice, and photos of the finished work. Review your liability limits, consider increasing to $300,000 if you're below that. Ask about equipment breakdown coverage if your policy doesn't cover power surges. Install a whole-house surge protector to protect the charger (and everything else). Maintain safe cable management to reduce trip-and-fall liability risk.
